Is it all really Black & White?
For the first time in m entire life, I've never been on edge as I have been since "45" became the "Commander in Chief". From Day one, the wombs that divided this country in the past, have now had a rebirth. I used to think that slavery, segregation and racism were behind us, because our ancestors fought the fight for us. How naive have I been? I remember my first encounter of racism as a child. I had a bestfriend, I'll call her "Dimples". Dimples was caucasian and I am a bi-racial child living in the deep country of Alabama. I was from New York and had no friends and she became my friend immediately. I remember the day we talked about having a sleep-over, I invited her to our home and told her to have her parents call my grandmother. We were so excited of the possibility! The parents never called, but Dimples came to me one Friday and with clothes in tow, said her parents said that she could spend the weekend with us. I was so excited, I didn't care about the grown-ups communicating. She rode my bus and we went to my home. My grandmother questioned her but she pulled out a note givng her permission to stay with us. For grandma, that was enough. She ate with my family, she took a bath in our tub and she loved it! The weekend was so much fun...Then we went back to school on Monday..I didn't see her at school for about 2 weeks. When she finally came back to school, she was different. She had fear in her eyes. She pulled me to the side away from everyone and told me that she lied and that her little sister tried to keep her secret, but their father beat the sister all weekend until she told him where Dimples was. Instead of telling him the truth, she told him Dimples ran away. I was young and confused. She pulled up her shirt and I was horrified. She had black & blue marks, red welts all over her body. She told me he beat her so bad, she couldn't walk. Somehow, he found out she stayed the weekend with"N*****". Sh had finger marks on her neck and her lip was healing from being busted. I asked to talk to them and let them know we would never let anything happen to her, then she told me her father hated black people. How is that possible when you don't even know me? That hurt me so bad and then my fear kicked in. What if her father comes to our house and burn it down? Hurt my grandmother? Hang us from a tree? Before I left Alabama, I ran into her and she had a little girl with her. She told me that she ran away again and gave birth to her daughter. Daughter? We were 13? She told me her father was raping her and she couldn't take it anymore. She also told me she named her daughter after me. We never saw each other again. I have always wondered what happened to her and her daughter. So in 2017, as a woman I see the same issues unfolding that were around before I was born. People are so disconnected that the human life has no value. I want to make a difference, I want to be a voice for those who have no voice. The laws will never apply to all, they were written for a certain group of people. Is it possible to go from a naive child to a woman who will stand firm in her beliefs of justice for ALL? We will have peace on earth and good will towards ALL men and women. If we are going to make America great again, can we start with giving my ancestors their land back? You do know them, right? The NATIVE AMAERICANS!!!! So I guess the answer to my question is it all really Black & White..My answer is No.
